The second day of exploring the local-colours of the Kamloops area was no less exciting than the first! Perry and I hiked and rock-hounded for the morning—I think still satisfied with the yellow ochre of yesterday—but on our way our of Monte Creek we started noticing the hills …
At first, I think we just wanted them to be red (where, in actually fact, they were brownish) and each time Perry asked if we should stop the car, I looked hard and just couldn’t justify it. But, with each passing hill, the colour did seem to intensify … Finally, as we came around a bend in the road, a brilliantly bright red appeared in layers across the bluff and I knew we had to stop. We found a place to pull over a little way up the road and I hiked back to check it out. The red did indeed run in beautiful waves through the face of the hill!
Hiking back—after collecting some of this colour for later work—I couldn’t help but reflect on what a good couple of colour hunting days Kelly and I have had. I can’t wait to explore these local-colours once I’m back in my studio …
